Kerala Backwaters - Water Craft

Tuesday, 23 September 2014

The Kerala backwaters are known for houseboats, but many other watercraft ply these lanes.

One of these boats was the one we spent the day on. Our boat had a large living area, two bedrooms, and a kitchen. We had a home-cooked lunch, plus fresh fruit snacks and drinks. A relaxing and refreshing day.
This was the largest houseboat we saw on the water. There aren't too many with a full second deck.
Our captain had an umbrella handy for sun protection.

Ferries

Ferries ranged in size from just a few passengers in an open boat to a rather large boat that could carry perhaps a hundred people. (Maybe more, since this is India.)

The larger ferries barely stopped to let passengers on and off -- it looked like you needed to be comfortable with a "dynamic stop".
This brightly colored ferry was one of the larger ones.

Cargo

Small craft carried all the essentials for daily life.

Coconuts
Construction supplies (here, sand)
Even LP gas cylinders

  1. A weekend getaway is the second best option and they are usually a trip to nearby places that are surrounding the city. However, with the changing times, it is now possible for a weekend to spend in a Kerala trip.
