Tanzania 7 - Ngorongoro Crater

19 - 21 December 2014

The Ngorongoro crater is the remaining caldera from a massive volcanic eruption about 3.5 million years ago. (Early humanoids were around here at the time -- Oldupai Gorge is nearby. It must have been a spectacular disaster!) The crater is roughly 18 by 20 km across -- a substantial area with dramatic landscapes.

A panorama from the crater rim overlook, 19 December.
The same view two days later, 21 December, after two days of afternoon rain. Note the "green-up" and the expanded lake.

Sunrise in the crater from our lodge.
The crater walls provide a dramatic backdrop for the many animals found on the crater floor.
The large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and cape buffalo are dwarfed by the crater walls.

These clouds look like the mountain is an erupting volcano, but never fear -- it's just rain in the making.
The clouds keep building.
And eventually, there is a rain shower.
Evening clouds and showers.
Fog in a flat-topped acacia forest near the top of the crater rim.
