Along the Ganga: Bhagalpur to Sahibganj

Tuesday, 17 February 2015

This part of the Ganges is remote and sparsely populated (by Indian standards) -- not what I expected along the major river of India. Haze and fog added to the isolated ambiance.

In towns and villages, bathing and laundry are major activities along the river.

Every town and village also has a cremation site.

A temple on a rocky island at Kahalgaon. The murky atmosphere is evident, even after the morning fog lifts.
Note the high water marks on the rocks. During monsoon, the Ganga is wide(r) and deep. Now, it's wide and shallow.

While we were the only large ship on the water, many small boats plied the waters of the Ganga.

A small fishing boat.
These were the most common ferries taking people and vehicles across the river.
Larger ferries were uncommon.
