Leh - Ngari Institute

Monday, 7 September 2015

This afternoon we visited a hostel set up by a Buddhist foundation to provide housing and support (food, clothing, textbooks, school supplies) for Ladakhi children from remote areas that would otherwise not have the opportunity to get an education.

After school -- the children attend the local government school -- the children are given a snack before having an hour of free play time.
We interacted with the children. They were very outgoing and were amazingly good at English.

The "Principal" monk, tour guide  Chris, and one of the girls.
Several dogs hang around the Institute -- they have all been given names.
The children were delighted to show us their skill at reading English.
There is always one or two volunteer teachers at the Institute to help with English and math. Right now the position is filled by a German who recently finished university.
Every Buddhist institution needs a "Bodhi" tree (also known as a peepal tree) -- the tree underneath which the Buddha attained enlightenment. This small size of this tree shows how recently the hostel has been founded.
