Sri Lanka - Part 1 - Colombo

We spent  leisurely day in Colombo adjusting to a time zone nearly half-way around the globe. In the afternoon we walked about 3 miles (5 km) along the shore. It was warm (30+ °C, pushing 90°C), but the humidity was the real issue.

The Galle Face Wall is 10-12 ft (3-4 m) high. Below it is a very narrow sandy beach. This view is looking to the north.
Looking to the south. The tide is coming in. By the time we returned, there was almost no beach exposed.
Another view of the narrow beach and high sea wall.
Kite vendors tempted buyers with a variety of kites for sale
I particularly liked this kite.
Street food was available along the Galle Face Drive. The green stalls (background) sold mostly packaged snack foods. The blue carts (foreground) sold an interesting selection of seafood goodies. I wasn't brave enough to try any of them
I'm not sure if these patties were veggie or seafood based. They seemed to be the base for the next two items.
Whole crabs (plus the above pattie).
Shrimp (prawns?) on a pattie
Our turn-around point was the lighthouse. Our map calls it the Gabokka Point Lighthouse, while our guidebook calls it the Old Galle Buck Lighthouse. Doesn't really matter -- it's the only lighthouse around
Near the lighthouse is the Harbor Stupa (map) or Sambodhi Chaitiya (guidebook) The stupa is raised so that it can be seen at sea.
A Sinhalese lion on the lighthouse terrace.
On our way back we saw a large reptile swimming in an inlet. It resembles those classic photos of the Loch Ness Monster. At first we thought it was a crocodile of some sort.
But the forked tongue meant it was either a very large sea snake, or, more likely, a monitor lizard.
